Embedded-processes theoretical view of working memory

Working memory, as the assembly of mental faculties used to keep a limited amount of information in an accessible state temporarily (Cowan, 2017a), is an important part of the embedded-processes approach to information processing. I have given more extensive accounts of the embedded-processes view elsewhere (Cowan, 1988, 1995, 1999, 2019; Cowan, Morey, & Naveh-Benjamin, 2021). Figure 9.1 shows a graphic representation of the theoretical model. Here I am attempting to reconstruct the spirit of the theoretical approach and its potential relevance for practical issues. During my graduate training and early work in the field, I carried out some research closely aligned with the initiatives of researchers tying together the limited capacity of immediate memory and selective attention (e.g. Broadbent, 1958; Norman, 1968; Treisman, 1964). The explanations and visual representations of information processing models from the 1960s and 1970s did not satisfy me, for several reasons, and I handled those situations in my 1988 paper (with several subsequent refinements and clarifications) as follows.
